'''초록 :''' 쿤은 이론 선택이 범패러다임적으로 ‘공유된 가치들’에 의해 이루어진다고 주장한 바 있다. 이에 따르면 과학자들은 정확성, 정합성, 단순성 따위의 동일한 목록의 가치들을 공유하며, 각자 이론에 매긴 가치들의 가중치 합을 통해 이론을 선택한다. 이 글에서 나는 이 공유된 가치 접근이 쿤의 초기 견해가 가진 두 가지 문제, 즉 불일치의 어려움과 합의의 어려움이라는 두 가지 문제에 대한 해법을 제공한다는 점을 보인다. 또한 나는 쿤이 강조하는 이론 선택이 추구로서의 선택에 가깝다는 점에 착안하여, 추구 행위로서의 이론 선택을 의사결정 이론에 기초하여 분석하였고, 그 결과 이론 선택을 위한 가치들 중 적어도 일부는 인식적이기보다 실용적인 가치로 간주하는 것이 자연스럽다는 점을 발견했다. 이러한 발견은 과학에 대한 쿤의 급진적인 이해 방식을 확률, 가치, 의사결정에 대한 고전적인 이해 방식과 화해시킬 수 있는 한 가지 방법을 보여준다는 점에서 큰 의미를 가진다.

'''Abstract:''' Thomas S. Kuhn suggested that scientists choose theories by widely shared values. In his shared values approach, scientists share the same list of values such as precision, coherence, broad scope, simplicity and fruitfulness, and each scientist chooses theories by the weighted-sum of the values of theories. Firstly, I show that the shared values approach provides a solution of the two problems of Kuhn’s early view: difficulty of disagreements and difficulty of agreements. Secondly, I interpret Kuhn’s theory choice as an action of pursuit, and analyse theory choice by decision theory. As a result I discover that some values for choosing theories are practical rather than epistemic. This discovery has a significance in that Kuhn’s radical view of science can be reconciled with the classical view of probability, value and decision.
